CHARLOTTE. N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers coach Frank Reich says he and general manager Scott Fitterer have agreed on which quarterback the team will select with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. But Reich says the team won’t announce who that is until Thursday night, when the draft begins. The Panthers are choosing between Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson in an effort to upgrade a quarterback position that has been in transition for the last five seasons.Fitterer said last week he had waited to ask Reich who he preferred at No. 1 so that nothing would cloud either decision-maker’s judgement. But on Monday Fitterer finally walked into Reich’s office and popped the question on who he prefers — and both agreed on the same QB.“It was kind of like a proposal — and I said yes,” Reich joked Tuesday. “But there is consensus and we are excited.”Young remains the overwhelming favorite to be the first Panthers QB selected No. ...

Roberts declines Senate request to testify on court ethics

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:26:23 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Chief Justice John Roberts has declined a request from the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify at a hearing next week on ethical standards at the court, instead providing the panel with a statement of ethics reaffirmed by the court’s nine justices. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin, D-Ill., invited Roberts’ testimony last week, saying that there had been a “steady stream of revelations” regarding Supreme Court justices “falling short of ethical standards expected of other federal judges.” The invitation came after news reports that detailed a close relationship between Justice Clarence Thomas and a conservative donor from Texas. The donor, Dallas billionaire Harlan Crow, had purchased three properties belonging to Thomas and his family in a transaction worth more than $100,000 that Thomas never reported, according to the nonprofit investigative journalism organization ProPublica. In a letter to Durbin on Tuesday, Roberts said he would “re...

Renace en Brasil el equipo de fútbol de Mariúpol, disuelto por la guerra de Ucrania

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:26:23 GMT

Rent control bill fails in committee

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:26:23 GMT

DENVER (KDVR) — A bill that would have repealed Colorado's ban on rent control has died in committee.House Bill 1115 was heard Tuesday evening in the Senate Local Government and Housing Committee. Lawmakers killed the bill in a 4-3 vote. The bill would have allowed local governments to enact rent control policies. Rent control is prohibited under state law, and the proposal would have lifted the ban."We really need to do something to make sure that people can live in the communities that they work in," Rep. Javier Mabrey, a prime sponsor Democrat who represents Denver and Jefferson counties, has said of the rent control effort. Want lower RTD fares? It's possible next year. Here’s how to make your voice heard. The measure had better support in the House, where it passed on third reading in a 40-24 vote. It's unclear how the bill would have fared if it cleared the Senate. Gov. Jared Polis publicly opposed rent stabilization in a mobile home protection bill last year. On this year's ...

Colorado resorts expect more skiers after snowstorm

LOVELAND SKI AREA, Colo. (KDVR) --  Loveland Ski Area started the lifts Tuesday morning with 4 inches of fresh snowfall overnight and more snow on the way. "We could see up to a foot of fresh snow for tomorrow morning," said John Sellers, the Marketing Director Loveland Ski Area. The Pinpoint Weather team is forecasting a snowstorm to blow into Colorado Tuesday and Sellers said they are excited for all the snow. He said Loveland Ski Area's location is a total bonus. "Our elevation helps us a lot. Right here at the base, we are at 10,800 feet, so we can hold snow all season," Sellers said. Despite Colorado often experiencing spring snowstorms, Sellers said the ski area usually sets its closing date for the first week of May. He said there have been only a few seasons when the ski area has stayed open into mid-May. The reason for that closing date is so they can start getting ready for summer projects on the mountain.  Denver weather: Evening rain,...

Fire truck’s tire gets stuck in sinkhole in Holden

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:26:23 GMT

The tire of a fire truck responding to a gas leak in Holden had to be removed from a sinkhole Tuesday after part of a road gave way, officials said. In a statement, the Holden Fire Department said its crews responded around 12:30 p.m. after a MassDOT contractor struck an underground natural gas main in the 1000 block of Main Street. Officials said crews arriving at the scene found a large gas leak coming from a trench in the roadway that was being excavated. The leak prompted a roughly two-hour closure on Main Street as Eversource personnel responded to repair the damage, the fire department said. In the meantime, officials said a portion of road roughly 300 feet from the gas leak collapsed under a parked fire truck. Photos from the scene showed one of the truck’s wheels stuck in the sinkhole. The fire department said the truck was later removed with no injuries to anyone on scene and only minor damage.

Stolen wheelchair-accessible van returned to mother with disabled son

A Brockton mom was reunited with her stolen minivan Tuesday after police tracked it down Monday night. A matter of days after the van was taken from a spot outside her home Saturday morning, Sandra Tavares is now thanking those involved in bringing the van back. “I don’t even know how to describe how I feel,” she said. Tavares said the van was taken while she quickly ran back inside her home to grab her wallet. She was devastated because the wheelchair-accessible van serves as a link to the outside world for her 8-year-old son Neyden. “The van is everything for us because Neyden is everything for us,” Tavares said.Tavares spent years saving up for the van after Neyden was hit by a car and left severely disabled in 2016. Speaking this week, Tavares said Neyden smiled when she told him they got the van back. Tavares said she reported the stolen van to police. Brockton police then said a patrol officer noticed the van parked behind an apartment build...
