John Goodenough dies at 100; Nobel-winning scientist’s work led to creation of lithium-ion battery

He was 100.He died Sunday, according to a release from the University of Texas at Austin, where Goodenough served as a faculty member for 37 years. His cause of death was not provided.“John’s legacy as a brilliant scientist is immeasurable — his discoveries improved the lives of billions of people around the world,” UT Austin President Jay Hartzell said in a statement Monday.Goodenough is credited with the crucial discovery and development in the 1980s of materials that would allow for a more stable and powerful rechargeable battery.He became the oldest Nobel Prize winner at 97 when he was awarded the 2019 prize in chemistry for the development of lithium-ion batteries, alongside M. OAKLAND — Police on Tuesday released images of the driver and vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and run collision June 16 in East Oakland that left a 58-year-old woman dead.Police identified the woman Tuesday as Santu Maya, of Oakland.The fatal collision happened about 7:05 p.m. June 16 at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Vicksburg Avenue.Maya, who lived in the area, was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by a black Mercedes that was going westbound on Foothill and failed to stop for a red light, police said. Police said they believe the Mercedes was involved in a street race and the driver was speeding when the car hit her. Donte DiVincenzo is declining the player option on his two-year deal with the Warriors and will become an unrestricted free agent, according to media reports.The 26-year-old guard played a key role off the bench for Golden State last season, averaging 9.4 points and 3.5 assists while shooting 39% from 3 in 26 minutes per game. He played in 72 of the Warriors’ 82 regular-season games and all 13 of their playoff games.DiVincenzo came to the Warriors last season after a troublesome stretch with the Milwaukee Bucks and Sacramento Kings. (KRON) -- Cal/OSHA cited two employers in Half Moon Bay this week following an investigation into workplace violence that killed seven agricultural workers on January 23. The shocking mass shooting was allegedly carried out by Chunli Zhao, an angry 66-year-old farmworker who had worked for California Terra Garden and Concord Farms. San Mateo County prosecutors said Zhao was "angry at several co-workers over perceived mistreatment."Zhao lived in a tiny shack at California Terra Gardens. (KRON) -- The Oakland Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in identifying or locating a person and a black Mercedes Benz in connection to a fatal hit-and-run earlier this month. OPD officers were dispatched to an injury crash just after 7 p.m. on June 16. A pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle at Foothill Boulevard and Vicksburg Avenue. $10,000 reward offered for solving Oakland flower delivery homicide At the scene, officers discovered the victim, 58-year-old Santu Maya of Oakland, suffering from a severe head injury in relation to the crash. ATLANTA (AP) — The Minnesota Twins lost another reliever Tuesday when they placed right-hander Brock Stewart on the 15-day injured list with right elbow soreness.The move came one day after the team announced that José De León will need a second Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The right-handed reliever was placed on the 15-day IL on Sunday after hurting his elbow while warming up a day earlier.Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said he hopes Stewart, one of the team’s top setup men, has a short stay on the IL.
